Musiq “Soulja” Child’s ‘Radio’, Just Might Have Him Kicked Off… The Radio.

This track makes me go ‘HalfCrazy‘… but not in a good way. Do I smell a sellout? Oh, yes I do. That’s unless he’s trying to spoof Southern rap artists like Hurricane Chris and Souljah Boy, I believe that he’s trying to make the record labels appeased, since his 07′ album, “Luvanmusiq” received negative reviews (although I thought it was decent work). All in all, I’m pretty disappointed about Musiq Soulchild’s somewhat self titled track ‘Radio’ featured on his upcoming album “On the Radio”, September 16th, 2008. This track urges audiences to “snap [our] fingers and do the step”, instead of chilling and ‘Just being friends‘ or even being a ‘B.U.D.D.Y.‘. I’m confused, I was under the impression Musiq was a ‘BetterMan‘. With four decent studio albums under his belt, I hope that the rest of this album is not composed of such nonsense as this track.

So, what exactly makes Musiq a sellout? What makes anybody a sellout? What if he truly wanted to put this out because this is how he’s feelin at this particular point in his life? It kind of reminds me of when Jay-Z stopped making gangsta music. When he finally grew up and “changed clothes”. Everbody was pissed. Everybody wanted the Blueprint hustla to smash the diamond cufflinks and use them to cut dope. But as he said, that’s not somethin he still wanted to talk about. To me, he was more of a sellout when he came back out with American Gangster…because that’s not who he was, and although it was a damn good conceptual album, the music came out as forced because Jay-Z and Shawn Carter are two different people. Just maybe, it’s the same with Musiq. Not to compare him to any greats, but people like Marvin Gaye and Janet Jackson wore many different hats in their careers. They grow and change like everybody else. Ain’t that the definition of an artist?

I can’t speak for Athena, but I’m sure her definition goes something like “Changing your music to align with whats popular, so it’ll sell more.”

this joint is crack!

Fully respect and understand your point of view. Maybe Musiq is feeling a particular way.
Growth and change are part of the music business. Trying on a different hat is what Musiq is trying to do. To concur with Cheynne, yes I believe he is trying to boost his sales by “selling out”, meaning taking the tangent of a more Souljah boy vibe who is popular for some odd reason. Musiq is a great talented true artist in my perception. To better elaborate, Jill Scott is a neo soul artist. If she wrote a track about gangsters, or some guy who is thicker then a snicker, I would feel the same way. Musiq is a Neo-Soul artist. This hat does not fit him at all.

I was reading an interview with Musiq awhile ago and they asked him why he cut his hair and he responded that the label told him to to make him more marketable. So it wouldn’t surprise me if they told him to change his style to sell some records.
