MIT’s “Nexi MDS Robot”, Gauranteed To Cause The Uncanny Valley… (Video)

Presenting The MDS (Mobile Dexterous Social) robot, designed and built in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab’s Personal Robots Group, UMASS Amherst’s Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics, Xitome Design, and Meka Robotics. Now the uncanny valley is a hypothesis that when robots and other facsimiles of humans look and act almost, but not entirely, like actual humans, it causes a response of revulsion among human observers. That definitely applies to me, I sure as hell wouldn’t want one of these walking around next to me trying to fabricate humanity, especially after what I’ve learned from I-Robot, The Matrix, Terminator, 2001: Space Odyssey, Alien etc. Watch the video after the break of the MDS exhibiting an expressive range of movement using scripted animations, pre-recorded speech, and tell me you don’t share my sentiments…
